Why do the .40 Auto P99 magazines have followers in different colors?

The followers for the .40 Auto P99 magazines have come in four different colors. The original followers were molded in black, followed by orange, followed by medium blue, and finally light blue.

The only significant design changes in the follower were between the orange and medium blue, and between the medium blue and light blue. The black and orange followers are identical, dimension-wise, to those used in the 9mm magazines. The medium blue adds a groove that serves to clear the inward-protruding dimple found on the second generation magazine tube (see FAQ III-9). The light blue follower adds a flattened portion at its top that is also designed to further clear the inward-protruding dimple on the second-generation magazine tube.
